What is good hair?
Good hair is purely subjective as some may view ‘good hair’ as hair that has a loose ‘s’ curl shape to it and is easy to manage. Others still view ‘good hair’ as hair that is not, as the Americans like to call it ‘nappy,’ spongey, and difficult to comb.
I view good hair whether it be nappy, relaxed, straightened, or un-straightened, as hair that is free from split ends, well conditioned, and not brittle.
How do I know what is my hair type?
In determining which relaxer or hair treatment to use for your hair, you would need to look at your hair type and curl pattern.
Most afro-caribbean women use the following hair type analysis method listed below:-
Hair type
Loose curls = 2a, 2b, 2c
Thicker coily curls = 3a, 3b, 3c
Kinky, coily hair = 4a, 4b, 4c
Subtype
Fine and thin = 'a'
Medium-textured = 'b'
Thick and coarse = 'c'
Do I need to grease my scalp regularly to grow my hair?
No, however virgin castor oil has been proven to aid with faster healthy hair growth. It is not recommended to use greases that contain mineral oils, petroleum, lanolin, and parabens as these can block the pores, and create product build up, which will hinder hair growth if not removed thoroughly during washing.
How often should I wash my hair?
Afro caribbean hair can be prone to dryness, therefore it is recommended to wash the hair weekly with a shampoo. However, if you are co washing the hair, this can be done more regularly throughout the week as a substitute for shampoo until your next shampoo day.

I have split ends but I don’t want to cut them off as I want to save the length on my hair, can split ends be repaired?
Unfortunately not. You would need to trim them off completely, if you don’t, you’ll find that the split ends will continue to travel up the hair shaft to the roots, and you will be left with hair that is brittle, wispy, and frizzy.
I have heard that braiding hair helps the hair grow - is this true?
Braiding in itself doesn't grow the hair long, however, it is a great protective hairstyle to retain moisture in the hair which helps minimize breakage.
Be reminded that if you do decide to braid your hair, make sure that you don't wear them too tight, wash and condition the hair regularly, and don't leave them in too long - allow your natural hair to breathe!
